Student says window broken in Anita Knutson's apartment

MINOT, N.D. (AP) A Minot State University student who lived in the apartment across from Anita Knutson says he saw a broken window in her apartment.

Matt Murphy says he often parks his bike in a rack next to Knutson's bedroom window. He says he went to get his bicycle at noon Monday and noticed a broken window, with glass on the ground.

The body of the 18-year-old Knutson was found in her bedroom late Monday afternoon. Police suspect she was killed by an intruder.

They've released few details.

Police Lieutenant Dan Strandberg says a witness reported seeing a man running from the area. He's described as about 6-foot-2 with dark hair, weighing about 200 pounds and wearing a white T-shirt and dark shorts.

Knutson was from Butte, and graduated from Velva High School.

The school librarian, Iris Swedlund, describes her as "smiley and happy and colorful." (Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) APNP 06-07-07 0850CDT

Similar lives, deaths

As Minot, N.D., prepares to host a murder trial in the death of Mindy Morgenstern, investigators there have been handed their own homicide case with the death of Anita Knutson.

The 18-year-old Minot State University student’s body was found Monday evening in her off-campus apartment by her father.

Authorities believe she was killed by an intruder Sunday morning, but are releasing few details.

With no suspects, they’re asking for the public’s help, a similar move the Valley City (N.D.) Police Department made in September when Morgenstern’s body was found in her off-campus apartment by a friend.

Minot police Lt. Dan Strandberg said authorities are looking for a man seen running from the area near Knutson’s apartment at 2420 4th St. N.W. around 7:30 a.m. Sunday. He is described as 6 feet 2 inches tall, 200 pounds, with dark hair and wearing a white shirt and dark shorts.

Strandberg would not say how Knutson was killed or whether a weapon was found at her apartment, but said, “It was fairly obvious from what we saw at the scene that it was a homicide.”

It is unclear whether she was sexually assaulted. Preliminary autopsy results are expected this week. Her last contact with someone was by phone in the early morning hours Sunday, he said.

Strandberg said there were signs of forced entry into her apartment, but would not say where. Each apartment in the single-level complex opens to the outside, he said.

Athenais Arndt, a friend and co-worker of Knutson’s at Vanity in Minot, wrote on a memorial on Facebook.com that the screen to Knutson’s bedroom window was cut.

She also said Knutson was wearing a bathrobe when she was found in her bedroom, and had been stabbed with a pocketknife.

When asked about those details, Strandberg paused before answering, “We’re not going to comment on that.”

Arndt also wrote that a man had possibly stalked Knutson, but Strandberg said police had no reports of stalking.

Arndt declined to comment further Wednesday at the request of Knutson’s family.

With Knutson’s death coming on the brink of Morgenstern’s trial, some people may notice similarities between the two women.

A trial is slated to begin June 19 for Moe Maurice Gibbs, 34, a former Barnes County (N.D.) jailer charged with murder in Morgenstern’s Sept. 13, 2006, death.

Memorials to each woman, both described as “bubbly” by friends, quickly popped up after their deaths. More than 200 people have joined a Web site dedicated to Knutson on Facebook.com, where photos and stories are being shared along with the shock of her death.

Like 22-year-old Morgenstern, a New Salem, N.D., native, Knutson came from a small town, Butte, N.D., and attended a close-knit college. Minot State University has an enrollment of about 3,500, according to university spokesman Richard Jenkins.

Both universities sent out notifications to students about each death accompanied by personal safety reminders.

Strandberg said police have received fewer tips than expected, but still want help filling in Knutson’s weekend.

Anyone with information about her weekend or death is asked to call (701) 852-0111.

An investigator says Valley City State University student Mindy Morgenstern was strangled and stabbed in the neck.

Bureau of Criminal Investigation agent Mark Sayler testified today at a preliminary hearing for Moe Maurice Gibbs, who's charged with killing Morgenstern

He's been held without bond on a murder charge.

The 22-year-old Morgenstern, of New Salem, was found dead in her off-campus apartment September 13th.

Authorities say a D-N-A sample from Gibbs matched D-N-A found under Morgenstern's fingernails.

The two lived in the same building.

In court today, Sayler said a cloth belt was wrapped around Morgenstern's neck.

He said she died from a combination of strangulation and a cut to the neck.

Sayler said there were no witnesses and no signs of forced entry to her apartment.

Valley City Police Chief Dean Ross says a tip from the public has provided investigators with a better time frame for the killing of Mindy Morgenstern.

The 22-year old Valley City State University student was found dead in her off-campus apartment on the city's northeast side last Wednesday night.

Ross says police have narrowed the time of the killing to a period between 12:30 p-m and 1:30 p-m last Wednesday.

Ross says Morgenstern was last seen alive at about 12:25 p-m on that day.

Sayler said Gibbs had one gouge on top of his left hand and deep scratches on his right wrist.

Under questioning by Gibbs' attorney, Jeff Bredahl, Sayler said cleaning fluid was poured on Morgenstern's body. He said two knives were found at the scene, one propped up on her neck.

The "suspicious" man Valley City authorities want to talk to about college student, Mindy Morgenstern's, death could have been in Bismarck.

A employee at Gas Plus says a man came into the store Friday afternoon around 4:30.

She told police he was talking about the homicide in Valley City.

Police say he made statements that sent red flags to the employee.

She told police he also went to the newspaper stand to read the article on the death. The employee's description of the man fits the one police say Mindy gave in an August 22nd police report.

He's white about 5 foot ten heavy set and has grey hair.

The man was also driving a four door passenger car.

Bismarck Police will provide Valley City officers with surviellance video.

N.D., should be a safe haven, instead, people here are getting sicker & sicker. Especially with our oil boom. That teacher that was from Glendive, was jogging & got abducted & murdered. What really upsets me is: if you read the news N.D.,is "# 4 the most corrupt state in the US". I'm a white female, single & I used to brag about how nice & safe our state is, B.S.. Have you noticed, it's all about politic's"?. WHY ARE WE NOT NOTICED FOR "OUR" CRIME??? I used to love Minot, after the flood, again: it's all Policital & I hate this state, especially because they hide crime! My heart goes out Anita's & Mindy's & etc. etc. families. How about that guy that was decapitated in Cooperstown? The damn polictics, hide everything. Just Venting the TRUTH!!!
