Alief Hastings High School Coordinating Principal David Holmquist died Monday morning en route to the hospital after he collapsed in his home, according to a district spokeswoman. He was 55.
Holmquist recently suffered injuries to both his knees when he fell during graduation practice on May 25, according to district spokeswoman Susan Castro. He underwent surgery the next day and, for the first time in his 24 years as an administrator at Hastings, missed the school's graduation.
Castro did not know if Holmquist's injuries or post-operative complications were related to the later incident.
"Our whole district is grieving, and we're certainly going to miss Dave," said Castro. "He's going to leave a tremendous hole in our district and in our hearts."
Holmquist worked for the school district for 29 years, starting out as a business education teacher and football coach at Elsik High School in 1977, Castro said. He became that school's assistant principal in 1981 and moved to Hastings in 1982 as an administrator. He was named the school's coordinating principal in 1997, Castro said.
Holmquist is survived by his wife, Rhonda, a teacher at Hastings 9th grade Center; and children Michael, Amber and Kendra Holmquist.
Services are pending.
